I am glad you're writing reviews.. not sure if that was something you did a lot pre-Gold Derby but I know that working there probably didn't give you a chance to flex that muscle.
Yeah, reviews were verboten at Gold Derby if you had anything nuanced or negative to say. Sometimes you got the opportunity to gush or advocate, but not review, per se. I'm glad to be flexing that muscle too. I forgot how much I missed it.
The overhype was almost impossible to avoid and I'm glad I saw it while most of our colleagues were at TIFF. I see no reason to see it more than twice. The screenplay and Sean Penn are the standouts.
Yeah, there would have been no way to avoid it realistically without actually seeing the movie ahead of everyone else. Maybe I’ll revisit sometime in a couple of years after whatever its Oscar prospects are have ended.
